What healthcare services are available in senior living communities?

6 min read

When families begin exploring senior living communities, one of the first questions is what healthcare services are available and how those services can adapt as needs change. The best communities do more than provide a place to live—they offer a thoughtful continuum of care, from wellness support and personal assistance to skilled nursing and memory care.

At Londonderry Village, that continuum is designed to help residents live with purpose while knowing additional support is available when needed. As an outreach ministry of the Church of the Brethren, Londonderry Village combines quality housing, healthcare, and supportive services in an attitude of love and servanthood.

Common healthcare services in senior living communities

While every community is different, many senior living communities offer a mix of health-related services that help residents stay safe, comfortable, and engaged.

1. Wellness and preventive support

Many communities focus on helping residents stay active and well before more advanced care is needed. This may include:

  • Access to fitness and wellness centers
  • Exercise classes
  • Health-oriented recreation
  • Supportive programs that encourage movement, social connection, and routine

At Londonderry Village, residents in Independent Living have membership to the Paul and Carol Boll Wellness Center, which includes use of the gym, pool, and fitness classes. In some settings, wellness center use is available with physician consent.

2. Personal care assistance

For older adults who need help with daily activities, personal care services can provide just the right amount of support while still encouraging independence.

This may include assistance with:

  • Daily routines
  • Personal hygiene
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry services
  • Access to supportive social and spiritual services

At Londonderry Village, Personal Care includes services such as laundry, housekeeping, laundry labels, personal hygiene supplies, and access to social, recreational, and spiritual services. Residents may also use the wellness center with physician consent.

3. Skilled nursing care

When a resident needs a higher level of medical support, skilled nursing care can provide more comprehensive attention and oversight.

Skilled nursing services may include:

  • Nursing supervision and care
  • Ongoing health monitoring
  • Restorative nursing
  • Help coordinating additional treatments and therapies

At Londonderry Village, Nursing Care rates are based on a daily rate billed monthly, and rates include room, meals, nursing care, laundry labels, laundry service, housekeeping service, personal hygiene supplies, restorative nursing programming, and social, recreational, and spiritual services. Wellness center membership is also included with doctor’s consent.

4. Memory care

For individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, memory care offers a secure, supportive environment designed around dignity, routine, and personalized care.

A strong memory care program often includes:

  • A familiar, structured setting
  • Personalized support
  • Thoughtful staff engagement
  • Private accommodations that support comfort and dignity

Londonderry Village’s memory care neighborhood, Barteit Haven, is part of a full-service community. If care needs evolve, residents can transition to higher levels of care without leaving the campus they know and love. All 16 rooms are private and include individual bathrooms.

5. Rehabilitation and restorative services

Many senior living communities also provide therapies that help residents recover strength, maintain function, and support overall quality of life.

These services may include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Restorative nursing
  • Specialized treatment support

Londonderry Village offers several additional health services, including wound care, IV therapy, respiratory therapy through Symbria, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy including dysphasia treatment, and restorative nursing.

6. Specialty care and clinical support

Older adults often benefit from convenient access to specialty services without needing to leave the community frequently.

Londonderry Village residents have access to services such as:

  • Onsite podiatry
  • Optometry
  • Dental services
  • Psychosocial services
  • Specialty diets
  • Transportation

The community also provides pharmacy services and access to the Snell Community Center for chapel services, activities, and more.

Healthcare services at Londonderry Village by level of care

Different living options support different needs. Here’s a simple look at how healthcare services can vary across the community.

Level of careWhat it may include
Independent LivingAccess to wellness amenities, priority access to the Health Center, emergency maintenance support, and a maintenance-free lifestyle with health-related conveniences nearby
Personal CareSupport with daily living, housekeeping, laundry, personal hygiene supplies, social/recreational/spiritual services, and wellness center use with physician consent
Nursing CareNursing care, restorative nursing, meals, housekeeping, laundry service, personal hygiene supplies, and supportive programming
Memory CarePrivate rooms, individualized support, a secure and dignified environment, and access to the broader continuum of care if needs change

Why this continuum matters for families

One of the biggest advantages of senior living communities is that care does not have to start over somewhere new if needs change. A resident may begin in Independent Living, later need Personal Care, and eventually require Nursing Care or Memory Care.

That kind of continuity can make a meaningful difference:

  • Residents stay connected to familiar staff and neighbors
  • Families have greater peace of mind
  • Transitions are often smoother and less stressful
  • Care can be adjusted as needs evolve

At Londonderry Village, this full-service approach helps residents remain part of a community they already know and trust.

Questions to ask when comparing senior living communities

If you’re researching healthcare services in senior living communities, these questions can help you evaluate your options:

  • What levels of care are available on campus?
  • Is nursing care available if needs increase?
  • Does the community offer memory care?
  • Are therapy services available onsite or through a partner provider?
  • What health and wellness amenities are included?
  • Are there additional charges for certain healthcare services?
  • Can residents transition between care levels without moving to a different community?
  • What specialty services are available to support changing needs?
